The service requires a 15 to 30 minute appointment within a private room in the pharmacy.  The topics the pharmacy will cover includes:

  • Why the medication is prescribed and the reason behind this.
  • How this medication works in the body.
  • How to take the medication.
  • Expected benefits and side effects.
  • Other things that you can do to help benefit you.
  • Information to take home.

If you are currently on this medication/have had a change of medication, change your dose or just want to enquire, call the pharmacy to make an appointment to get this service.

Blister Packing Medications/Medico Compliance Packaging

Taking your medication is simple and convenient with Medico packing.

Blister packing involves putting medication into tear off blisters and strips which have the medication name, time to be taken, strength and dosage all included.

Medico packs are idea for people whom are on multiple medications, difficult or reducing doses, those with multiple caregivers, people whom have busy lifestyles as well as people with many long term chronic conditions.

What is involved?

  • Speak to someone in the dispensary regarding wanting your medications blistered.
  • Decided what indications you want blistered.
  • Decided what times you would like your medications (e.g. breakfast, lunch or dinner),

Blister Packs can take a day or so to make up.  If this is something you are interested, visit the pharmacy before your medications are due.

Compression Stocking Fitting

Kensington Pharmacy provides a variety of compression stockings.  These includes:

  • Below the knee.
  • Thigh length stocking with a lace band.
  • Thigh length stocking with support band.
  • Thigh length stocking with belt.
  • Panty hose stocking.
  • Arm sleeve without mitten.

We have a number of pharmacists that are trained in compression stocking measurement.  A short consultation with someone trained in compression stockings is needed before purchasing.  A 15 minute consultation within a private room in the pharmacy is required where the pharmacist may need information on your show size, age, height and weight.  The pharmacist will also measure your thigh, mid-thigh, knee at widest/narrowest point and ankle.

For the most accurate fit, it is best to take these measurements first thing in the morning.

If you require compression stockings, stop into the pharmacy or call to enquire.

Please note.  Due to the individual requirements needed in compression stockings, a deposit is needed before we order the stockings.

Dabigatran and Warfarin Counselling/Information Service

Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP)

Some pharmacists are trained in selling the ECP for unprotected sex within 72 hours (3 days).  This requires a short confidential consultation with the person wanting the ECP and a pharmacist in a private area. The consultation usually takes 5 to 10 minutes and involves asking a couple of questions to make sure the medication is right for you.  The cost of this medication is $35.00.

If you require the ECP, drop into the pharmacy and ask for a pharmacist.

Rheumatic Fever Prevention

Rheumatic Fever is a serious disease that can cause inflammation of joints, brain and skin.  But more importantly, can cause serious long term heart problems that may require heart surgery.

It usually starts with a sore throat.  Most sore throats don’t lead to serious illness.  Cover your mouth when you cough, washing and drying your hands often will help reduce spreading bugs to others.

In a small number of people who contact the Group A  Streptococcus bacteria if not treated this can lead to Rheumatic Fever.  This infection is most common in Maori and Pacific Island children, and those who share their homes with lots of others.

Kensington pharmacy is involved in a FREE Throat Swabbing Pilot Program for children and young adult aged 5-19 years to try and detect, and treat this infection.  Come and speak to one of our trained staff to see if you are eligible.

SMART (Symbicort) Counselling Service

The purpose of this information session is to ensure you know all about your SYMBICORT inhaler and to help you get the benefits it offers.

The service requires a 10 minute consultation within a private room in the pharmacy.

The topics the Pharmacist will cover includes:

  • Causes of your asthma
  • What common inhalers are used in asthma and when it is appropriate to use them
  • Practice using your SYMBICORT inhaler
  • How SYMBICORT works within your lungs
  • Tips and hints about using your inhaler

A fridge magnet will also be given which summarises all the information covered in the session.

If you are currently getting prescribed a SYMBICORT inhaler as a preventer and reliever and want to enquire about the service, call the pharmacy to make an appointment or stop into the pharmacy.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI/Cystitis) Antibiotic Course

A urinary tract infection (UTI) (also known as cystitis or bladder infection) is an infection that affects part of the urinary tract.  Symptoms include painful urination and either frequent urination or urge to urinate (or both). The main causal agent is Escherichia coli, though other bacteria, viruses or fungi may rarely be the cause.

Some pharmacists are able to prescribe Trimethoprim (300mg at night for 3 nights) for an acute UTI.  In order to prescribe this, a pharmacist needs to have a short 5 minute consultation in order to make sure the medication is right for you.  If you are:

  • Between the ages of 16 and 65.
  • Not currently pregnant or possibly pregnant.
  • Not taken antibiotics in the last 6 months.

Visit the pharmacy and ask to speak to a pharmacist about Trimethoprim.  Alternatively, you may call/visit the pharmacy if you have any questions regarding this service.
